Comment: From the Preface: The extraordinary insight medical astrology affords the doctor into the nature of the whole of his patient has to be experienced and to be believed. The quick insight he can obtain in differential diagnosis will save his time. For instance, Saturn in Libra afflicting Mercury, induces very obscure spasms in the blood vessels of the kidney which frequently is confirmed only after many tests of the blood samples simply because the condition goes on changing with the movements of the planets. Similarly, in the realms of appendicitis, thousands of horoscopes have been studied and the fundamental astrological ingredients of the disease have been defined. Rahu & Mars prominent in respect to the 6th house reveal one's susceptibility to appendicitis and it will manifest under the directional influences of the afflicted planets.... (pg. xiii)

Bibliography

Comment: This is the revised 2007 edition of a book that first appeared in 2003.

We learn in chapter 5 that transits in Vedic astrology are not planet to planet, but planet to house, and the house is not considered from the ascendant, as in the west, but from the house with the natal moon in it. These houses can quickly be divided into benefic & otherwise, based on the transiting planet. The sun, for example, makes a benefic transit to the moon when it is in the lunar houses 3, 6, 10 & 11. Transiting Venus is benefic in all lunar houses except 6, 7 & 10. Mars & Saturn are only benefic if in houses 3, 6 or 11.

Delineations are traditional. Here are a couple:

Transiting Mars in the 6th house from the natal Moon is very auspicious. Native will gain robes, grains, wealth, fame & happiness, prosperity, will perform charitable activities, destruction of enemies, freedom from chronic illness, success in litigations, income from agriculture, chances of marriage if unmarried, birth of a child, elevation of status, fulfillment of desires, may cause infections or accidents. (pg. 60)

When Jupiter transits the natal Moon sign, it creates inauspicious results. The native will lose property & reputation, will have bad health, incur heavy expenditure, domestic worries, bad relations with friends & relatives, loss of intellect, loss of status, humiliation, mentally imbalanced, fear, punishment, incur wrath of rulers, harassment by government, obstacles in marriage. (pg. 73)

I've never really understood this kind of writing, which is why, when people ask if I "do" Vedic astrology, I answer that while I know all the various pieces, I can't seem to make them work. But enough about me.

Chapter 16, Moorti Nirnay, happens monthly when the sun changes signs. You note the transiting moon's house position at that time (lunar house, again) as extremely auspicious (1, 6, 11), moderatly auspicious (2, 5, 9), moderately inauspicious (3, 7, 10), or extremely inauspicious (4, 8, 12), which presumably sets the overall tone for the month, but there are, of course, other factors. In the following chapter is a useful table showing just how malefic Saadhi Saati is, sign by sign. This, and the subsequent chapters on transits to nakshatras, dasas & ashtakavarga, were all new to me. They comprise slightly more than half the book & are clearly the meat of it. They have a lavish use of tables & numerous example charts.

The chapter on Sarvato Bhadra Chakra runs 40 pages, has many illustrations & is a major treatise in its own right. For those of you who study that chakra, this might just be the reason to get this book.

SHAD BALA (Planetary Strengths Calculation & Application) - S.K. Duggal & Neerja Taneja, $22.00
Contents: Acknowledgement; Preface; 1. Shad bala - an introduction; 2. Sthana bala; 3. Dig bala; 4. Kaala bala; 5. Chesta bala; 6. Naisargik bala; 7. Drik bala; 8. Ishta bala & Kashta bala; 9. Bhava bala; 10. Shad bala pinda; 11. Vimshopaka bala; 12. Planetary rays; 13. Delineation of horoscopes; 14. Controversies; Annexure 1: Divisional charts; Annexure 2: Bibliography; Annexure 3: Index. Includes several dozen tables.

Comment: There are surprisingly few books on Shad Bala, the organized study of planetary strengths in the horosope. Includes numerous slokas (and translation & commentary) from Vedic classics, and many example charts. This book far exceeds what can be found in De Luce's book (above), and should be the standard reference for the subject.
