Roots of Asia Tarot

by Amnart Klanprachar & Thaworn Boonyawan

Roots of Asia Tarot
Price: $25.00

Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 2.76 x 4.76 inches, or 70 x 120 mm.

Back of card: Inside the same thin green border as on the front, a swirling dull-orange mess. Disjointed facial features can be made out - empty eye sockets, a nose, a mouth far out of place, hands under the chin. Scattered around are a number of tiny figures (all female, I think). Top center: A round red ruby. Center of card: A whitish disk, around which the orange swirls. Does not contrast well with the front. Technically not for inversion, but in practice I doubt you'll notice. There are no inverted definitions in the booklet.

Booklet included: Yes, 87 pages, 2.7 x 4.73 inches, or 68 x 118 mm. Perfect-bound - rare for these things. English only.

Publisher: A.G. Muller. Printed in Belgium.

Comments: This is labeled an esoteric deck. As a start in deciphering the esoteric-ness of the deck, on the back of the box is this well-known quote from The Buddha:

Believe nothing because a wise man said it. Believe nothing because it is generally held. Believe nothing because it is written. Believe nothing because it is said to be diving. Believe nothing because someone else believes it. But believe only what you yourself judge to be true. (I have seen this better put.)

I confess did the esoteric thing a couple of decades ago. It was a useful distraction that kept me from going crazy while I looked for a job that might support me. I've not much sympathy for it now. I might add to what Buddha said, something like, Don't believe something is esoteric just because someone says it is.

As a tarot deck, Roots of Asia Tarot has numerous nice cards. There's also a lot that are messy, where the urge to show detail (or mastery of an artistic style) overwhelms clear imagery. This is where an editor is helpful, to encourage the artist to clarify & refine his work. A lot of tarot decks could be helped this way.
