Ancestral Path Tarot Book & Deck Set

by Julie Cuccia-Watts. Book by Tracey Hoover.

Ancestral Path Deck & Book Set
Price: $29.00
Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 3.15 x 4.25 inches; or 80 x 115 millimeters.

Back of card: Turquoise/blue field with what looks like a turquoise blue button or crystal ball in the center. In the ball is a white image & while that's symmetric, one is in the light, the other in the shadow. So this deck wants to be inverted & the cards will let you know when they are.

Book included: Yes, 239 pages, 4.45 x 7 inches, or 113 x 177 mm. Each of the cards are illustrated & dealt with in detail. There's also a small booklet included with the deck itself, 24 pages, 3 x 4 inches, or 77 x 102 mm. This text is also by Tracey Hoover.

Publisher: US Games. Printed in Belgium.

Comments: Remember what we said about the Magician as a stand-in for Jesus Christ? This is Jesus himself, & not in a good mood. One amusing accident of the display above: Jesus seems to be pointing his Finger of Holy Wrath at the tarot reader (the Fool) immediately below. We admit to being primitive readers, but when we see Jesus himself in a commanding pose waving what looks like a stick with a whip in his right hand (add in the lemniscate for the whip) & Wrath flowing from his left, we would think the next card to be the object of this condemnation. Jesus looks like he's in a cramped cave somewhere, which indicates narrow-mindedness, which further reinforces unpleasant images of this card. Of course this isn't what it says in the book, but as we've said elsewhere, they can say anything they want in books, it's the cards that matter.

Just for contrast, this deck shows the Lovers as a man & woman on their knees, face to face in full congress. Since we've all seen that image already, there was no reason to annoy you by showing it here. This Lovers card differs from most other decks, which show the contrast of opposites, not their union. So in this deck the card following the Lovers would show their progeny.

Court cards are King, Queen, Prince & Princess & depict deified ancestral figures.

Each suit represents a different group of people: Swords are Japanese, in which a woman's epic song details the Ainu people's relationship with their bear god.

Staves are black Egyptians (are these the same as Nubians, or is that an archaic term?) & the cards depict the death & resurrection of Osiris, the triumph of light over darkness.

Cups depict the Arthurian legends. Here is the booklet: "....'Morgana's Reverie' synthesizes the story of the Cups as the sister of King Arthur prepares herself for the role of psychopomp [?] on the path to the King's initiation into the knowledge of his genetic inheritance and his spiritual responsibilities." Now you know why we sometimes tell you not to read the book.

Sacred Circles (Pentacles) depict post-Columbus native Americans. The booklet, again: "A Menominee creation legend of bear & thunder spirit ancestors & a Winnebago holy (medicine) song support the tale of the vision quest...."
