Vedic Astrology by

Sumeet Chugh

Sumeet Chugh got off to a fast, early start, writing all his books before he was 30. With more books planned, he mysteriously stopped writing. Contacts tell me he had unexpected family problems. There are many of us who would welcome his early return to astrological authorship, he has much still to show us. He has been compared to the much older K.N. Rao. Lest you be surprised at his age, remember that in an ancient land of nearly a billion people with a strong astrological tradition, this is almost to be expected. Please note that a planned book on Financial Astrology did not come to pass.

TIMING OF EVENTS - Sumeet Chugh, $11.00
Contents:
Preface; 1. Elements of Hindu astrology; 2. Chalit chakra; 3. Planets & different ascendants; 4. Important considerations in judging a horoscope; 5. Results of various dasas; 6. Transits or gochara; 7. Varshphal in a nutshell; 8. Yogini dasa; 9. Ashtaka varga; 10. Timing of events - case studies.

Comment: This book illustrates the practical aspects of timing events through Vimshottari dasa, transits, Yogini dasa & the annual chart. It also covers the chalit chakra & divisional charts.

In the preface is this curious statement: During these days [1996] many Pseudo-astrologers with little or no knowledge of vedic astrology have been coming out with trash as research papers. These astrologers never tire of self praise praising their own books as the best in the last 300 or 400 years. Nothing can be more shameful than this. These books contain hardly any actual Vedic astrology & is full of catchy slogans, memory shortcut tables etc. All these are doing great harm to the cause of astrology.... This appears to apply to an author whose books are featured on this site, but in the case that Chugh had someone else in mind, I will not mention names here.

DETERMINING PROFESSION & UPS & DOWNS IN CAREER - Sumeet Chugh, $13.00
Contents:
1. Salient features of Vedic astrology; 2. Planets, signs, houses & profession; 3. Determining profession; 4. Judging a nativity for ups & downs in career; 5. Practical illustrations in ups & downs in career; 6. Foreign travels in connection with profession; 7. Nakshatras & profession; 8. Annexure I: Navamsa & Dasamsa tables; 9. Annexure II: Functional malefics & benefics; 10. Annexure III: Planets in houses, malefic, benefic, neutral.

Comment: Unlike K.N. Rao's book of a similar name, this book gives hints at how to determine profession from Vedic charts. Also unlike Rao, the section on ups & downs is vast & includes many notable Americans. The book concludes with travel in connection with profession, and a list of nakshatras & professions, which I cannot recall seeing elsewhere. Superior to Rao's, which was first published in 1993. Chugh's is from 1995.

YOGINI & KALCHAKRA DASA - Sumeet Chugh, $11.00
Contents:
1. How to judge a nativity; 2. Yogini dasa; 3. Results of Yogini dasa; 4. Yogini dasa (practical illustrations); 5. Kalchakra dasa preliminaries explained; 6. Interpreting Kalchakra dasa; 7. Kalchakra dasa (practical illustrations); 8. Appendix 1: Yogini dasa operating at birth; 9. Appendix 2: Finding the moon's navamsha as per Kalchakra dasa

Comment: In Yogini dasa, 36 years are allotted to 8 yoginis, themselves being ruled by Moon through Rahu (Ketu has no lordship). At the end of one 36 year Yogini cycle, another starts automatically from Mangala. For each major period, there are 8 sub-periods, as would be expected. Yoginis & dasa lords, with Nakshatras & periods: Mangala/Moon (Ardra, Chittra, Shravan)(1 year); Pingala/Sun (Punarvasu, Swati, Dhanishta)(2 years); Dhanya/Jupiter (Pushya, Vishaka, Satbisha)(3 years); Bhramari/Mars (Ashwini, Ashlesha, Anuradha, Purva Bhadra)(4 years); Bhadrika/Mercury (Bharani, Magha, Jyestha, Uttara Bhadra)(5 years); Ulka/Saturn (Krittika, Purva Phalguni, Moola, Revati)(6 years); Siddha/Venus (Rohini, Uttara, Phalguni, Purvashadda)(7 years); Sankata/Rahu (Mrigasira, Hasta, Uttarashadda)(8 years).

Kalchakra dasa, main features: The 27 Nakshatras are divided into Savya & Apsavya groups: The first three Nakshatras belong to Savya, the next three to Apsavya, etc., for a total of 15 Savya & 12 Apsavya Nakshatras. Both of these are then further subdivided into 2 sub-groups each. For example, the two subgroups of the Savya main group are headed by Ashwini & Bharani respectively, the Ashwini group totaling 10, the Bharani group with 5. Years are then allocated by astrological sign, according to its planetary ruler, from 4 to 21 years. In Vimshottari dasa, the total cycle is always 120 years, but in Kalchakra dasa, the total varies according to the Moon's Navamsha. The possibilities are 83, 85, 86 or 100 years. The order of each mahadasa is different for each sub-group of the dasa, which can be found in one or another table. There are also Gatis, or jumps. The Mandook Gati (frog jump) is when the dasa skips one sign, jumping from Virgo to Cancer, for example. The Markati Gati (monkey jump) is a backwards jump of one sign, from Leo to Cancer, for example. The Simhavalokan Gati (lion's stare) is a trinal jump, to the 5th or 9th sign, from Pisces to Scorpio, or from Sagittarius to Aries. If one lives to complete a cycle (a minimum of 83 years), there are rules to determine where in the cycle one starts again (not the original starting point). Numerous tables help simplify the calculations.

Effects of both dasas are fully described.

VARSHPHAL OR ANNUAL HOROSCOPE - Sumeet Chug, $11.00
Contents:
1. Varshphal & its importance; 2. Casting of the annual horoscope; 3. Importance of muntha; 4. Preliminaries & planetary strength; 5. Lord of the year; 6. Interpreting Varsh-Dasas; 7. Planets in houses; 8. The 16 Tajika yogas; 9. The essence of important tajika yogas; 10. Sahams;

11. Cardinal principles for judging an annual horoscope; 12. Annual horoscopy & mundane astrology; 13. Tripataka-chakra; 14. Practical applications of annual horoscope; 15. Monthly horoscope; 16. The daily-horoscope & the hora-horoscope.

Appendix I: Calculation of house cusps; Appendix II: Patyayini dasa; Appendix III: Divisional chart tables: Hora; Drekkana; Chaturthamsha; Panchamamsha; Shastamsha (mislabeled as hora); Sapshamsha; Ashtamamsha; Navamsha; Dashamamsha; Ekadashamsha; Dwadashamsha.

Comment: Known in the west as a solar return, here are rules for reading annual charts in Hindu astrology. Chugh says to set the varshphal chart for the birth place, not the place of residence. The Varsha-dasa, one year in length, is a method of timing events indicated in the annual chart. The Muntha is the progressed ascendant of the natal chart (at the rate of one sign/year) & is placed in the annual chart. Lots more.

HORARY ASTROLOGY & SWARAUDAY SHASTRA - Sumeet Chugh, $11.00
Contents:
1. Horoscope of the question; 2. Preliminaries explained; 3. Success or failure of objective; 4. Time of fructification; 5. Marriage, Relationships & love affairs; 6. Progeny & child-birth; 7. Wealth, profession & status; 8. Health, diseases & death; 9. Thefts & lost property; 10. Missing persons; 11. Multiple questions; 12. Nakshatra, Avasthana's & hora; 13. Swarauday shastra; 14. Vedic science of breathing; 15. Answering queries.

Comment: In his introduction, Chugh says there are two methods of answering horary questions: Parasari & Tajika. In this book he uses both methods. He also gives a brief description of Nakshatras in horary astrology. He says that of all the various methods, the "Sarvatobhadra chakra" is the most amazing of all. Questions can also be answered on the basis of Swara, or breath. Swarauday shastra is prediction based on which nostril you're breathing from. A very interesting book.
