The Whimsical Tarot

Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 2.78 x 4.7 inches, or 70 x 120 mm.

Back of card: In the center, a violet many-petaled flower (reminded me of pictures of the ajna chakra). Around that, a border of yellow & white that resembles Celtic scroll-work. Around that, a thin violet frame. Quite colorful. May be inverted.

Booklet included: Yes, 24 pages, 2.6 x 4.38 inches, or 66 x 111 mm. English instructions only.

Publisher: US Games. Printed in Belgium.

Comments: Artist Mary Hanson-Roberts has other tarot decks to her credit. I very much like her style. All cards are clearly labeled. Many of the cards are based on fairy tales, nursery rhymes & other childhood memories, none of which are mentioned in the booklet for the deck. (I'm not sure that's detrimental.)

For every tarot deck, I claim there are 78 cards. That's not exactly true. Tarot cards are printed in a sheet of 10 cards by 8 cards (or 8 cards by 10 cards) & then cut into individual cards. So there's actually 80 cards in the box. One of the two remaining cards is usually a title card, the other often has advertising matter on it. In this deck, the second card has these words:

Help your child begin to explore a Higher Self, as you rediscover your Inner Child. Whimsical Tarot and your own imagination are the only tools you'll need for a journey within. Through familiar childhood imagery, this deck will give you access to the wonders & gifts of your spiritual side. Free your mind, and let your spirit flow....

The introductory notes bemoan the fact that people think too much, and when it comes to tarot, make themselves think too much, which ruins tarot. Whimsy, and familiar images, overwhelm the thought process, resulting in direct perception. Which is what tarot is all about. (Eg, if you have to look up the meaning of the card, you haven't yet grasped the meaning behind it.)

This is a delightful deck. Enjoy.
