The Visconti Tarots Deck & Book Set

a traditional deck, restored by A.A. Atanassov, book by Giordano Berti & Tiberio Gonard

The Visconti Tarots-deck & book set
Price: $34.95

Or get the Deck by itself.

Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 2.35 x 4.5 inches; or 60 x 115 millimeters.

Back of card: Fancy brown & gray 3 dimensional scroll pattern. Can be inverted. Looks too fancy to be original.

Book included: Yes, 159 pages, 5.9 x 8.3 inches, or 15 x 21 cm. Text by Giordano Berti & Tiberio Gonard. B&W illustrations. Instructions for 11 different spreads. Major arcana get 1 - 2 pages, minor arcana 1 page each. The authors are moderns. They can quote the origins of every card but not their meanings. A fool is better than a fool, but aside from that, the magician is a blunderer, the high priestess is just a woman in a fancy gown, the empress a pregnant woman, the emperor a chief administrator, the pope head priest, etc. These are the authors' opinions, of course, but it does strip the major arcana of any reason for being major. Court cards are fairly well described, description of the individual number cards are highly abstract, but then, so is the deck.

Publisher: Lo Scarabeo. Printed in Italy.

Comments: The Visconti-Sforza were the ruling house of Milan in the 15th century and commissioned a number of tarot decks. These are among the earliest surviving decks. Cards from 16 different decks survive, from single cards to the most complete, the Pierpont Morgan deck, with 74 of the original 78 cards, which is the source for these reproductions. The four missing cards have been reconstructed (among them, the Death card shown above) and all have been restored to produce this splendid deck. As you can see from the cards shown above, these are not old & worn out. On the face cards and major arcana, the restorer has made lavish use of gold foil. A handsome deck, one that repays study.

Packaging note: The set is packed in an ornately printed, but rather flimsy box. The outer cellophane was broken on arriving with us, the box was already damaged, though both book & cards were in perfect condition. Hopefully Lo Scarabeo will get beefier outer packaging.

Special Note: There are two different Visconti tarot decks. The one shown above is the restored version. The other is the original (worn) Visconti-Sforza Pierpont Morgan version. It's also quite large in size.
