The Universal Fantasy Tarot

by Paolo Martinello

The Universal Fantasy Tarot
Price: $22.95

Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 2.6 x 4.72 inches, or 66 x 120 mm.

Back of card: Based on the Wheel (above). The Wheel card, reduced in size, appears in each of the four corners. The supports behind the Wheel, when reduced, appear to divide the card into four quarters, and as there is an image shown beyond the wheel, the effect is like looking out a window. May be inverted, but does not contrast well with the front of the card.

Booklet included: Yes, 64 pages, 2.6 x 4.74 inches, or 66 x 120 mm. Instructions in English, Italian, Spanish, French & German.

Publisher: Lo Scarabeo. Printed in Italy, imported by Llewellyn Worldwide.

Comments: "Fantasy", in this deck, refers to a fantasized European medieval world. The booklet credits this to the 19th century English writer William Morris, and the 20th century Irish writer, Lord Dunsany, but one might just as well invoke the memory of Brugel. More recent developments, according to the notes, includes the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, Poul Anderson, Jack Vance & others.

On the side of the box, it says,

A voyage on the edge of time to discover the secrets hidden in the folds of myth. A visionary world, full of energy, populated by heroes & magical creatures.
The instructions don't support these ideas, as there is no mention of myth, nor any named heroes or magical creatures. One might as well refer to the myths & heroes & magical creatures in the traditional Rider-Waite deck.

Many of the cards themselves are wonderfully evocative, though not necessarily in harmony with traditional tarot concepts. A deck to enjoy.
