Comments: Jean Francoise Alliette (1724 - 1792), was a French cartomant who believed that tarot was the legendary Book of Thoth, dating back to 2170 BC, created at a magician's convention that took place at the Temple of Amon in Memphis, in ancient Egypt. Alliette thought the cards had been completely distorted over the millennia & around 1789 published his restored tarot deck. Each card bears its name as well as keywords (upright & inverted) & for Francophiles everywhere, it's all in French. The booklet with the cards provides effective translations. Keywords on the major arcana cards, instead of being descriptions of the cards, relate to elements & qualities. Each of the 78 cards are discreetly numbered (1 - 78), with the Fool last. The major arcana are unique, they are listed below. In parenthesis, the equivalent in the standard Rider deck:

1. Le Chaos
2. La Lumiere (The Sun)
3. Les Plantes
4. Le Ciel
5. L'Homme et les Quadrupedes (The World)
6. Les Astres (The Star)
7. Les Oiseaux et les Poissons
8. Repos
9. La Justice (Justice)
10. La Temperance (Temperance)
11. La Force (Strength)
12. La Prudence
13. Le Grand Pretre (The Lovers)
14. Le Diable (The Devil)
15. Le Magicien ou le Bateleur (The Magician)
16. Le Jugement Dernier (Judgment)
17. La Mort (Death)
18. Le Capucin (The Hermit)
19. Le Temple Foudroye (The Tower)
20. La Roue de Fortune (The Wheel of Fortune)
78. La Folie ou l'Alchimiste (The Fool)

A glance at the list shows a great many of the usual cards missing & others in strange places. Alliette succeeded in removing the overt Italian/ecclesiastic references in the major arcana. Whether or not this restored the deck to its ancient Egyptian roots, whether or not there was any such thing as an ancient Egyptian tarot, I do not know. But in any case, Le Grande Etteilla, as this deck is also known, will repay close study.
