by Stella Bennett

The Star That Never Walks Around Tarot Deck & Book Set
Price: $34.95
Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 4 inches, or 101 mm, a round deck.

Back of card: Looks like a hand-stitched sampler: An off-white eight-pointed star on a navy blue background. Around the very edge, the navy blue background alternates with a 14-section off-white border.

Book included: Yes, 200 pages, 6 inches/152 mm square.

Publisher: Redwheel/Weiser. "Manufactured & assembled in China by Regent Publishing Services."

Comments: On the back of the box, it says, When the great buffalo herds roamed the earth, the tribes of the Great Plains followed them, guided by the North Star - The Star That Never Walks Around. In the spirit of her forebears, Stella Bennett has transformed the traditional western tarot (which she's been reading for more than 50 years) into a guide & oracle based on Native American totems & teachings.

In the Star That Never Walks Around:

Traditional suits of the tarot become:
Thunderbirds (fire/Wands)
Frogs (water/Cups)
Butterflies (air/Swords)
Turtles (earth/Pentacles)

The original art is reminiscent of 19th century Plains Indian ledger art, with imagery drawn from many Native American traditions - warriors & medicine women become court cards, the Coyote becomes the Fool.

Round cards echo the influence of Mother Earth & reveal the waxing & waning influences of the 78 images.

As befits a woman with 50 years experience, the book is excellent. It appeals from the very first page. I wish it were available separately, it has much hard-won common sense in it. A round-deck innovation: The degree which an individual card is not upright tells the reader the degree to which the influence signified by the card is waxing or waning, as with the lunar disk the idea was inspired by. The first 69 pages are a wonderful study in how & why tarot works the way it does, and how to learn it effectively. Descriptions of the individual cards are, for the most part, the traditional ones. Bennett says to learn the basics, then modify that according to mood, client, etc.
