Comments: This page is intended for our Vedic astrology customers, but I encourage all our other browsers to have a look.

Nakshatras are wonderful. They represent one day's travel by the moon in its ceaseless orbit around the earth. So every night when you go out to look at the moon, it's in a different nakshatra. Nakshatras are also known as lunar mansions & they are used not only by the Hindus, but also Chinese & Arabic astrologers. Use in western astrology died away, though I would love to see it return.

Nakshatras, the Hindu term for lunar constellations, are used in much the same way as the 12 signs of the zodiac. Actually, nakshatras are more richly developed than signs, even though, at 13 degrees, they are much smaller. The first nakshatra starts at 0 degrees Aries in the sidereal zodiac. Here are some of the various ways in which nakshatras can be classed, as listed in Light on Life, by Defouw & Svoboda: Activity, caste, creation, direction, gender, nadi, nature, qualities, sexual type (27 animals), species & tattvas. They can also be divided into quarters, or padas, of three (and a fraction) degrees each. KT Shuhbhakaran gives fascinating descriptions of planets in each of these tiny fragments in his two volume book, Nakshatras.

Use these cards to acquaint yourself with these 27 primordial energies. You could make a large drawing of your chart & place the appropriate cards next to the planets & lagna in it. Or you can use these as an aide to memorization.

The small book is a wealth of information, not only about the nakshatras themselves, but also how they were formed & how they related to the ancient matriarchal cultures of the world. This deck is a most useful aid in the study of Vedic astrology. The packaging is good, though as the product is not cello-wrapped, the outside looks a bit worn by the time it gets to us. This seems typical of Vedic astrology supplies, by the way.
