Comments: This is based on the incomplete Estensi Tarot (also known, erroneously, as the Charles VI Tarot) of 1470, of which only 16 major arcana, and one single minor arcana card (the Knave of Swords) survive. For the missing cards, the modern artists took inspiration from the major arcana of other 15th century decks. For the minor arcana, they used a cycle of frescos (painted, 1469-71) at the Palazzo Schifanolia, in Ferrara. It is suspected the first tarot decks may have been created in Ferrara several decades before they were first known to be in Milan.
The deck has lavish use of gilt, which never scans well. On the cards above, the areas in black with white dots are gilt. Notice also the very tiny uppper left & right corners, which distinguish the various suits.
