The Tarot of the Cloisters Deck

by Michelle Leavitt

The Tarot of the Cloisters Deck
Price: $24.95
Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 4.45 inches, or 113 mm in diameter

Back of card: A blue/violet fan with four blades, straight on one side (forming a cross through the center), arced on the other. Behind it, curly waves. Looks like the inside of your washer on laundry day, suds & all. As the cards are round, inversion is moot.

Booklet included: Yes, 24 pages, 4.10 inches, or 105 mm square.

Publisher: US Games. Printed in Belgium.

Comments: Made to look like stained glass, though not very good glass. Early medieval glass is small & irregular in shape, stark in design and strongly, simply colored. Renaissance glass, in larger, regular chunks, is dynamic in color & scenic in design. The Age of Enlightenment threw out all that dark old glass in favor of light frosted stuff. Stained glass was "reinvented" in the 19th century in a neo-Renaissance style. So the pale colors & vague shapes shown in this deck seem to be a fancy of the artist.

I find little to remark in this deck. Cups are called Vessels. This seems the only change from the usual.

For those not familiar, a cloister is an enclosed area attached to a cathedral or monastery intended for the private use of the clerics. A notable example can be seen in upper Manhattan (NYC) at a place called The Cloisters. It was brought from its original site in southern France.
