The Basic Tarot Deck

by Gudrun Dobratz

The Basic Tarot Deck
Price: $25.00
Number of cards in deck: 78

Measurements: 3.75 x 5.5 inches, or 95 x 140 mm. Large.

Back of card: Very different from the front. Gray-blue "marble" with a white vertical "crack" on the left side. In the lower left corner, a picture of a stone sculpture of a bashful Cupid, finger to lips. Not intended for inversion.

Booklet included: Yes, 44 pages, 3.65 x 5.43 inches, or 93 x 138 mm.

Publisher: AGMuller. Printed in Switzerland.

Comments: Were the Germans always an angst-ridden lot? Is this deck a hangover from the old Weimar days or can we find the same feelings in Goethe's Werther? Where's a fun-filled Bavarian beer-hall to cheer these folks up?

Amid the abstractions there are various interesting cards. Note the Scream falling from the tower. The Magician's face turns up, more or less, on all four Page cards, which are identical except for the names printed on them. The High Priestess wears an ankh, one of a series of cards with magical symbols on them. Justice is intertwined with a Star of David. Death features a skeleton & behind him, an inverted Pentacle. The Temperance card is called "Mixture". The Sun card has a bright yellow sun at the center & two smiling children's heads below. Above the sun are shown the corpse of horse & the skeleton of some other animal. The Judgment card has three spirits rising out of open coffins each clearly marked with a Cross. The World shows a man dancing (looks more male than female to us) with both penis & vagina. All the Knights are highly abstracted, all the Queens are shown in tight close-up, all the Kings are simple pen & ink lines.

The booklet included with this deck is heavily psychological. It also has notes on the various symbols shown in the deck, ignores the six pointed star but includes several pages on Kabbalah. If I didn't know better I'd suspect this was a carefully made, very politically correct deck.

A gloomy deck, I think, though I must admit that I do not understand it as well as I would like.
