Medieval, Traditional Astrology, part 2

Medieval Astrology, part 1

FROM THE OMENS OF BABYLON: Astrology & Ancient Mesopotamia - Michael Baignet, $10.95
An exploration of the astrology & magic of ancient Babylonia & Assyria & their impact, via the Italian Renaissance, in the modern world. How the astrological texts were originally compiled & eventually discovered, what they mean & how, through the Florentine master, Ficino, they came to influence the modern world. Paper.

ASTROLOGY IN THE RENAISSANCE: The Zodiac of Life - Eugenio Garin, $7.95
How the Renaissance forced a distinction between "religious" & "scientific" astrology & with it the division of a unified Medieval world into the sacred & secular we know today. Much more happened than the mere separation of astrology & astronomy, and it was neither quickly nor cleanly done. The emergence of the modern world from the Medieval is a fascinating epoch in world history. Paper.

ASTROLOGIA GALLICA, Book 21 (Morinus System of Horoscope Interpretation) - Jean-Baptiste Morin (aka Morinus), translated by Richard Baldwin, $8
The French equal to William Lilly wrote a great & fundamental astrological treatise, not in French, but in Latin. Book 21 examines the various theories of stellar influence & shows by logic the true & false. In the 2nd section, Morin gives us his rigorous & demanding methods of horoscope interpretation. Highly readable. Paper.

ASTROLOGIA GALLICA: Book 22: Directions - Jean-Baptiste Morin (aka Morinus), translated by James Herschel Holden, $17
20 years separate the AFA's translation of Book 21 from the recently published Book 22. Here, Morin's disdainful opinion of Ptolemy is a wonder to behold. Morin gives comprehensive rules for accurate forecasting. He also answers at length many still common objections to astrology in general & forecasting in particular. His scholarly thoroughness reminds us of the best of C.E.O. Carter. Extensive appendices: Jerome Cardin on latitude of aspects; excerpts from Books 2, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 23 & 24; notes on the solar eclipse of April 8, 1652; horoscopes cited in the text; how to calculate primary directions. We hunger for Morin's complete works. Paper.

CONCERNING THE MORE CERTAIN FUNDAMENTALS OF ASTROLOGY - Johannes Kepler, $1.50
An almanac for the year 1602, but first, with guilty conscience, a review of the entire astrological justification for annual predictions. This takes up the first 20 pages of this 31 page booklet & the apologies continue through the predictions. So a brief treatise on how Kepler felt about his astronomical/astrological existence. Reduced shipping charges apply. Small paper.
