Tables of Houses, Atlases, Calculation Aids, page 1

Tables of Houses, etc., page 2

Tables of Houses are a shortcut to setting up houses. House systems, even the Equal House system, are actually quite complex. Most of us haven't a clue how to calculate them from scratch, I confess that I don't. Of the 12 houses, the angles are the easiest, but even here things are not so simple. For more on calculation, see Bob Makransky's excellent Primary Directions, a Primer of Calculation (now out of print, apologies).

For ephemerides, see Ephemerides

PLACIDUS TABLE OF HOUSES - Rosicrucian Fellowship, $23.00
Computer calculated Placidus houses (the most commonly used house system) from 1 to 66 degrees north/south latitudes. Also includes world atlas with latitudes, longitudes & time correction (to GMT) for over 3000 major world cities & 4000 American cities & towns. With instructions for southern latitudes in English, French, German & Spanish.

The Rosicrucians organize their tables by latitude, then by sidereal time. This unique format makes rectification a snap: The line directly above the calculated cusps shows the chart 4 minutes earlier, the line directly below the calculated result shows the chart 4 minutes later. (With the AFA/Astro Numeric/Dalton/Mitchelsen house tables, you have to go to the next table, usually on another page.) This is why the Rosicrucian Tables of Houses will always be my favorite house table book. The downside is that only ascendants are calculated to the exact degree & minute. Other house cusps (including the MC) are given to the nearest degree only. Given that few birth times are exact anyway, I've always found this adequate. Greater accuracy is desirable, and can be had, but usually only by observation. For those who need more precise calculations, see the other Tables, below. For an example of the Rosicrucian formula, see the Sample Page (pdf).

293 pages. Rosicrucian Fellowship, paper.

Introductory notes include instructions for southern latitudes, interpolation, simple proportions, house cusp correction tables & logarithms, with examples. Large, clear printing, easy to read. Organization is by midheaven degree, then latitude north (or south). Click here for a sample page (pdf).

180 pages. AFA, oversize paper.

TABLES OF HOUSES, PLACIDUS SYSTEM - Astro Numeric/AFA, $18.00
0-66 degrees north and south latitudes. Also a Tables for Geocentric Corrections to Latitude, Conversion of Arc to Time (Degrees), Conversion of Arc to Time (Minutes & Seconds), Proportional Logarithms for Finding House Cusps, House Corrections for Exact Sidereal Time, and, House Corrections for Exact Latitude. Introductory notes include instructions for southern latitudes, interpolation, simple proportions, house cusp correction tables & logarithms, with examples. Organization is by midheaven degree, then latitude north (or south). Of the various tables organized by latitude, this has the largest, clearest printing & is easy to read & use. That, and the ability to calculate cusps to the nearest minute of a degree, merit a star. Click here for a sample page (pdf).

AFA, oversize paper, 180 pages.

THE MICHELSEN BOOK OF TABLES, Koch & Placidus, 0 - 60 degrees north - Neil F. Michelsen, revisions by Rique Pottenger, $19.95
Both Koch & Placidus tables in one book, great accuracy, good price. The downside? Poor formatting. If houses matter to you - and they do to us - then take the advice of one of our customers: Bulldog clip the section you don't use so you won't accidentally stray into it. Organization is by midheaven degree, then latitude north (or south). The same oversize format as the Astro Numeric/AFA/Dalton tables, but printing is small. Click here for a sample page (pdf).

Also: Rob Hand's essay, How to Cast a Natal Horoscope, a worksheet to check your work, interpolation tables, diurnal motion tables, time tables, longitude to time conversion table, clock to sidereal time conversion table, longitudes & latitudes for major cities in the world, instructions for calculating the east point & vertex, instructions for southern latitudes, instructions for trigonometric calculators, explanation of how Koch & Placidus cusps are calculated.

170 pages. ACS, oversize paper.

THE BETZ PLACIDUS TABLE OF HOUSES FOR NORTHERN LATITUDES - Martha & Keith Betz, $11.00
Contents: How to Calculate the House Cusps; How to Use the DT & DL Numbers to Interpolate; Instructions for Southern Latitudes; the House Tables themselves (0 TO 65 degrees inclusive); How to Use Sidereal Time Tables; Sidereal Time Tables.

Comment: Despite the title, this and all other tables books may easily be adapted for southern latitudes (instructions included). The book is organized like the Rosicrucian Tables (above): By latitude, then by sidereal time, which, as above, makes rectification a snap. Page layout is not as clear as the Rosicrucian (Martha, are you reading?), nor are there listings of major cities, as in the Rosicrucian. On the other hand, the price is outstanding. Published in the UK by our friends at Wessex Astrologer, who tell me that before this book, there was no UK-published house tables available. See a Sample Page (pdf).

Wessex Astrologer, unpaginated (about 100 pages).
